Allyn, or Allen | Charles F., | Born March 4, 1844, son of Frederic Allyn and Ann Morris who subsequently divorced. Lived in Detroit at enlistment. Originally enlisted in 2nd Michigan Infantry. Served in the Peninsular Campaign and was captured at Williamsburg, VA. He was confined at Richmond, VA until paroled and exchanged. Enlisted in company G on August 12, 1862, at Detroit, for 3 years, age 18, possibly violating his parole. Mustered August 13, 1862. Wounded in the head and right side at Gettysburg, PA on July 1, 1863. Treated at the Lutheran Seminary field hospital. He also served in Wilderness, Spotsylvania and North Anna. Allyn was severely wounded by a bullet that shattered his right elbow joint and traveled downward, lodging in his right side at Cold Harbor on June 3, 1864. Four inches of bone were removed to save his life. Discharged for disability May 17, 1865. He moved to Comber, Ontario, Canada after the war and married his business partner’s sister, Alice Amy Ludlum in 1874. They had nine children, one of whom died as an infant. Allyn considered his wounded arm a burden to him the rest of his life and drank heavily. He died of a aneurysm or brain tumor on June 4, 1893, age 49. He is buried at St. George’s Churchyard, Comber, Ontario, Canada. | |
