According to family history, he lay on the field for possibly four days before his brother, Robert, assisted him from the field; treated at a field hospital and subsequently moved to the warehouse owned by Colonel C.H. Buehler on Carlisle Street in Gettysburg; doctors believed he was "doomed to die" from his wounds but he was moved to the hospital in York, Pennsylvania, on an unknown date and moved again, possibly to Harper Hospital in Detroit; his leg never healed properly and he walked with a limp for the rest of his life. He served as a Hospital Clerk while healing in the hospital and subsequently attended business college. He then returned to Romulus and purchased a 160 acre farm, served as the township's Supervisor seven times, was employed at the Northwestern Life Insurance Company where he reportedly accumulated a fortune. He built a brick home in 1878 that still stands today, founded two banks in Romulus and New Boston and returned to Gettysburg at least once, where he and his brother met the cyclorama artist Paul Philippoteaux who included the two in his famous Gettysburg painting; buried in Romulus Cemetery.
